Meeting: 12th March, 2025 |
Ruth Allen, her friend Barbara, and Ruth’s big, black Labrador, Ika, sat patiently at the back of the Memorial Hall, as members of Llangynog Berwyn Belles WI completed the evening’s business.
Then, as Ruth (profoundly deaf herself) and Barbara from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, set up the display table at the front of the hall, Ika walked round, quietly greeting all the WI members.
Members looking at the various items for sale, knowing that profit from their purchases went directly to this very worthy cause.
Ruth described the background to Hearing Dogs and explained how Ika is one of many dogs, trained normally for at least four years, to alert deaf people to a variety of sounds from a doorbell, fire alarm, text message, telephone, car horn to even a baby crying, thus enabling a deaf person to lead a normal, safe and interactive life.
Ruth’s talk and Ika’s demonstration of her own training, were informative and inspirational, making members more aware of the amazing work that takes place through humans and animals working together for the betterment of society.

The evening was rounded off with a tasty supper and Ika also enjoyed a few of her own well-deserved treats.
