Veterinary Delights

After a hot, sunny day, members of Llangynog WI met in the cool of the Memorial Hall and welcomed Montgomery vet, Oli Hodgkinson, who arrived cheerful and breezy after a full day’s work.

‘It shouldn’t happen to a vet’ but it obviously does, Oli described the many animal issues that he and other vets have to deal with daily. Through often amusing anecdotes, he demonstrated the hard physical work, problem solving and sometimes very difficult decision making that vets have to make and the stress it can cause to farmers, pet owners and the vets themselves.

From arms up cows’ rear ends - lovely in the winter but not so lovely in the summer - to putting sugar on the surface of the uterus to help in the reduction of a prolapse, members were entertained and informed.

A really interesting and enjoyable talk!

Competition: To write a caption to a picture of a heifer lying down with a vet sitting on his neck.

This was won by Wendy “I am not a-moo-sed”, Anne Hill was 2nd with “neigh lad! This isn’t how you ride side saddle!” and Pam was 3rd with “Now that’s what you call sitting down on the job!”

The evening was rounded off with a tasty supper, provided by our hosts, Debbie and Ann Marsh.
