Members of Llangynog WI had an insight into what it is like to suffer from Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) by trying out pairs of specially adapted glasses which simulate the effects of this condition. AMD is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK, and can result in sufferers being unable to drive, read or recognise faces.

Malcolm Johnson, from the Macular Society, gave an informative talk at Llangynog’s April meeting, raising members’ awareness of the disease itself, and also, of the campaign to improve NHS provision. He explained that there are two types of AMD, wet and dry. Dry AMD develops slowly over many years whereas wet AMD causes rapid loss of central vision.

Malcolm, an AMD sufferer himself, runs the Macular Society Support Group in Oswestry, and there is also a similar support group in Welshpool. The Macular Society’s National Helpline number is 0300 3030 111.

To round off the evening, Cath Williams, Ann Morgan and Hazel Owen provided and served a tasty supper for all to enjoy.
