Meeting: 14th March, 2018
Concertina Capers

Andrew Norman gave the members of Llangynog WI a fascinating history of the concertina at our March meeting, showed us how they are made, and explained the complexity of their construction, of which we were certainly not aware.

He discussed how expensive they used to be when first invented in 1829 by Sir Charles Wheatstone and played a few requests along the way, including the theme tune to Captain Pugwash (The Trumpet Hornpipe), bringing back such childhood memories to many of our members!

Andrew has been building, repairing and playing concertinas for over thirty years now and his knowledge and warm, entertaining style made this an evening to remember.

He also judged the monthly competition – a round badge incorporating a treble clef with a floral theme, won this month by Pam Parnell. He said he loved the fact we must all be quite musically inclined as we all managed to get the proportions of the treble clef right.

The raffle prize was donated by Anne Hill and won by Shivadhara.

Anne Hill & Hazel Owen provided refreshments for a tasty supper.

Competition: Design a badge in a circle using a treble clef and a floral theme.
1st: Pam Parnell; 2nd: Ann Morgan; 3rd: Hazel Owen.
