Meeting: 14th February, 2018
Murray the Hump

Who would have thought that ‘Murray the Hump’, a ruthless Chicago gangster and associate of Al Capone, would have his roots in the small Welsh village of Carno?

In desperation, during the Great Depression, his parents left their isolated hilltop farm and emigrated to America where ‘Murray the Hump’, born Llewelyn Morris Humphreys, grew up. The fascinating details of his life, as a highly successful mobster, bootlegger and racketeer were brought to life by speaker Rod Evans at the February meeting of Llangynog WI.

Humphreys, a highly intelligent and charismatic character, exercised his corrupting influence over the unions, the film industry, the police, the FBI, politicians, and even presidents. After Al Capone’s death he became America’s ‘public enemy number one’, but despite this he always maintained a low profile, and even to this day is little known.

After the talk, members enjoyed a tasty supper, complete with prosecco and cake. This was in celebration of Hazel Owen’s ‘special’ birthday, and in recognition of her longstanding support, commitment and invaluable contribution to WI.
