| Meeting: 8th April, 2026 |

A recent photo of John taken while drawing comics on the (very small) island of Yap, in Micronesia, in the Pacific.
John Swogger, local archaeologist and illustrator, described and demonstrated how comics can be used to visualise and explain our understanding of ancient sites throughout the world and their historical, cultural and environmental connections. Communicating often very complex interpretations and research findings through cartoons enables such knowledge to reach a much wider audience.
Just one of the very many archaeology comics written and illustrated by John. John guided members through ways in which the essential visual details of, for example, a castle, can be caught, creating an instantly recognisable cartoon image, and words or phrases to accompany the cartoons that convey meaning without lengthy explanation.
A fantastic talk and members really enjoyed having a go at drawing their own cartoons!
Anne Hill thanked him and Mary also asked for appreciation from the members as he generously refused to take any payment!
