Meeting: 11th May, 2022

Fixing Fast Fashion

Llangynog WI - Open Evening

On May 11th members held a Fashion Show of pre- loved, recycled and repurposed clothes and accessories, as a way of showing that we don’t need to buy new to look good!

Llangynog WI's Open Evening, 2022, a fun evening with a serious message. A fabulous fashion show, with members modelling outfits either old, repurposed or second hand, was held in the Memorial Hall! Maureen Clark, climate champion, having researched 'fast fashion' showed there is no need to buy new to be fashionable.

Fast fashion has a huge impact on the planet, for example, 170 million children being caught up in child labour exploitation, with 65% working in the textile industry. The amount of water needed to make one new pair of jeans equates to 10 years drinking water for one person!

These facts, plus many others, encouraged the audience to make pledges, in a bid to help save the planet, which they shared on post-it notes. Pledges such as, using the washing machine less often, hanging washing outside to dry and resisting impulse buying!

All thoroughly enjoyed the evening, which included an opportunity to bag a bargain at a sale of second-hand clothes and accessories.

A tasty supper rounded off a really splendid evening.

Joanne did a sterling job getting the stage ready for our compere, Jan, and all our super models. She’s so creative!

Members (and helpers) arrive early to set everything up.

The Berwyn Room houses the usual superb supper and our absolutely amazing sale of members pre- loved clothes and accessories! Members work flat- out as everything has to be sorted and put out on rails and tables.
