Meeting: 23rd August, 2021 |
Seven intrepid members of Llangynog WI in Powys were up for a new adventure and decided to try paddle boarding on Lake Vyrnwy on Monday 23rd August 2021. It was an overcast but very still day and the lake was as smooth as a mill pond, perfect for such absolute beginners.
Our WI members set off on the boards on their knees, as recommended by the wonderful Dave Proctor of Bethania Adventure, who was coaching these first timers.
He did demonstrate how to next stand up on the board, although Val, the first to try, ended up in the water instead. Wonderful splash! Having been ‘rescued’ and safely back on board, Val had another go and this time made it, as did Janet, although she later also ‘enjoyed’ a dunking, after losing her balance. Others mostly managed to stay on their paddle boards, either by staying on their knees or sitting on the boards.
The group had great fun with this different take on a WI meeting. It was certainly different to a usual first meeting for Marie, who only joined Llangynog WI a week earlier! For all seven members it certainly made a refreshing change to be out, about and sharing such a memorable experience. Zoom meetings just can’t compete!

It was such a pity Mary and Chris Browne were unable to join us as planned.
Hopefully, they’ll come along next time!
Thanks to Anne Hill for the write-up and to our ‘onlookers’ for the photos.
