Meeting: 8th May, 2019
A Magician in our Midst

David Scarborough, dressed as a mysterious ‘man in black’, greeted our visitors with a tasty tipple, i.e. ‘Mary’s Magic Potion’, as they arrived for our ‘Spells & Magic’ W.I. Open Evening.

The evening entertainment began by members, together with Alan Young as Cruella, performing an adapted version of the spooky witches’ scene from the WI Christmas Show, involving drama, spells, music and dance.

This was followed by magician, Jack Dent, whose amazing sleight-of-hand kept the audience thoroughly entertained. As well as performing tricks, Jack also detailed the historical development of the art of magic in our society.

Members concluded the entertainment by doing a special ‘witchy’ version of their hilarious ‘grannie’ dance, joined by Alan Young as Michael Flatfoot. This involved a variety of dance genres, such as Gangnam, Riverdance, Pop and Bhangra!

The evening was rounded off with witches, magician and mortals enjoying a tasty supper of sandwiches, cakes and savouries, before going home with a little more magic in their lives.

Thanks must go to John Wilson for expertly capturing everything on video, and also to Stephen Hill and Mark Treanor for providing the superb lighting and sound effects.
