Meeting: 8th March, 2017
Masters of the Sky

A warm welcome was given to Chris Hurrell at Llangynog WI’s March meeting. Chris, an active member of Montgomeryshire Wild Life Trust, gave members a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Osprey; the only bird of prey in the world that feeds exclusively on fish.

His talk covered details of the Dyfi Osprey Project, near Machynlleth, which provides a safe haven for these truly magnificent birds before they migrate to West Africa. It was an outstanding presentation, packed with interesting and often surprising facts, and given with much knowledge and enthusiasm.

The competition table provided a wonderful display of members’ skills in creating their own birds, using a wide variety of techniques. These included knitting, embroidery, silk painting, collage, crochet, needle-felting, drawing and water colour. Chris Hurrell was asked to judge the competition, and chose an exquisitely executed painting of a wren, by member Maggie Parker, to be awarded first place!

A welcome supper was provided by hosts Ann Morgan and Pam Parnell, and a lovely bird-themed raffle prize of an apron and napkins, was donated by Mary McKenzie and won by Val Atherton.
