World War 1 event - 'For Home & Country'

A truly memorable evening commemorating the centenary of World War One, organised by Llangynog WI and villagers, took place in Llangynog Memorial Hall on Saturday 11th October 2014. The audience was taken on an emotional journey through the war years and beyond. The stories of those young men, whose names appear on the Llangynog memorial plaque, were brought to life through words and images.

A mixture of narration, poetry, drama and music enabled the audience to experience both the horror of war and its tragic consequences, and also to be made aware of some of the ways in which the war changed society forever. Many wore clothes of the period which created a real air of authenticity. Ladies in Edwardian dress distributed welcome refreshments, waist-coated gentlemen escorted their ladies to the dance floor and popular songs of the time filled the hall with memories.

Contributions of artefacts, photographs and documents from the community were displayed to create a really wonderful exhibition of the time. These ranged from pieces of furniture and household objects to medals and other military memorabilia.

The raffle was well-supported and the money raised will go to The British Legion and Help for Heroes.
