St. Oswald’s Church Tower

0n 22nd June a small group of members (Maureen, Val, Chris, Joanne, Janet, Anne Hill and Anne Saunders) enjoyed a fascinating visit to St. Oswald’s Church Tower in Oswestry, preceded by a delicious meal at Prezzo’s.

After parking up members made their way to the restaurant, where everyone enjoyed an Italian meal.

It was then time to meet up with Anne Saunders and stroll down to the church, where a guide was waiting.

We had to climb over 100 steps to the top of the tower of Oswestry Parish Church.

On the way up we stopped in the ringing chamber.

Here we were given an explanation and demonstration of church bell ringing, i.e., campanology.

It was then time for members to have a go!

We also visited the belfry.

The eight bells were first installed over 300 years ago and five still date from 1717. The eighth bell measures 3ft 8” in diameter and is very loud!

The six intrepid members make their way up the final flight of stairs!

Finally, we made our way to the very top, where the views over the town and beyond were breath-taking!

The weather was warm and sunny and luckily for us, visibility was as good as it gets... absolutely perfect!
