Meeting: 13th December, 2023 |
On Wednesday 13th December, our guest speaker, Bharti Patel-Smith, gave a talk/demonstration on Indian cookery. Bharti is a volunteer at ‘OsNosh’ a Community Kitchen based in Oswestry, which uses surplus food to create delicious, nutritious meals.
Volunteers collect good food from local stores and suppliers that would have otherwise gone to waste; this is then shared with the local community.
Firstly, Bharti talked about how much Indian curries vary depending on whereabouts in Indian they originate. She showed us her traditional Masala Dabba containing all the spices needed to create delicious and authentic dishes.
After this, she demonstrated how to shape and cook a chapati using pre-prepared dough.
There was enough dough for members to have a go at making their own chapatis!
A challenge eagerly met by many.
Bharti and her husband, Chris, were on hand to give help and assistance if needed.
Finally, a very tasty supper of vegetable dhal curry and Bombay potatoes was provided by Bharti for all to enjoy… with our chapatis of course! Committee members provided desserts and there was mulled wine to be enjoyed throughout the evening.
Debbie, dishing up mulled wine, and enjoying a tipple herself of course.
Time to tuck in. Julia, is no stranger to Indian cookery
as husband Jorj is a bit of an expert.
Festive and Fabulous!

A very generous amount of food and other essentials, kindly given by WI members to be donated to the Welshpool and District Foodbank.
“I’ve taken our donations to the foodbank today which were weighed in at 26.44 kg. The volunteers asked me to pass on their thanks and gave me a tour of their operation.
They reported a massive increase in need this year with referrals up by 23%!”
